If you are like most homeowners, there are sounds in your home that are completely normal to the point that you don’t even notice them. This includes your cooling system. Your AC will make a certain amount of noise as it works to keep your home cool. You will always hear light and gentle whooshing noises when your AC is on. There’s air moving through there that makes a sound. This will get louder as you walk under vents. This should sound normal and not be alarming. However, as your AC ages, it is normal for it to make unusual noises that indicate something it wrong. If your AC is making strange sounds, it is important that you don’t ignore them. North Country Aire is here to talk about some strange sounds you shouldn’t ignore when you hear them coming from your AC.
Don’t Ignore These Strange AC Sounds
When your AC is making a strange sound, it often means that there is something off or a problem that needs to be addressed. Like mentioned above, there are a lot of noises in your home that are normal, but when you notice a new noise that accompanies your AC kicking on, you shouldn’t ignore it.
– Banging: A lot of the time, when there is a banging noise as your AC kicks on, it is a problem with your compressor that is causing it. If there are parts that have become loose in this part of your AC unit, it can cause a banging sound to happen. It is an issue that needs to be addressed with an HVAC professional.
– Screeching: When you hear a screeching sound coming from your unit, it can be an awful noise that you want to get rid of immediately. This sound usually means that the fan motor is malfunctioning in your outdoor unit. Another issue that can cause screeching is due to damaged bearings in the fan motor. When metal is grinding on metal, it causes screeching to happen. Turn it off right away and call for professionals to come take a look.
– Humming: A low hum is common when there is a contactor relay switch issue to be addressed. This will cause the AC to be unable to turn on. It is an electrical issue that is hard to ignore as you will be sweating it out until help comes.
– Rattling: A lot of the time, when you hear something rattling in your unit, it is caused by debris outside that has been trapped in the outdoor unit. Removing the debris should fix the problem. However, it could also mean that there are parts that have become loose with time and need to be replaced.
– Whistling or Hissing: A hissing noise can be caused by a refrigerant leak in your unit. The refrigerant is found in a closed system with high pressure. A leak can cause a release of that pressure.
