If you are like most people, you have gotten used to the noises that your home makes. You have systems in your home that make a quiet hum, or creaks and pops that seem to happen here and there. Your AC is one of those systems that you are likely used to listening to as it whirrs and works to cool your home. When your AC all of a sudden isn’t sounding like it normally does, that is cause for concern. North Country Aire is here to talk about different noises that can come from your unit when it isn’t working properly.
Watch Out for These Unusual AC Noises
It is important that homeowners know what strange sounds mean when they hear them come from their AC system.
– Banging & Clanking: The last thing you want to hear is banging around inside your unit when it kicks on to start cooling the house down. This usually means that there is a part that has become loose somewhere inside the compressor. You need to turn off the AC as soon as possible so that you don’t further damage the unit.
– Buzzing: Another sound to watch out for is buzzing. You shouldn’t hear any buzzing coming from your AC when it turns on. This can mean a couple of different things. The most common problem that generates buzzing is an electrical problem. However, it could also mean there is debris in the unit or the motor is failing.
– Hissing & Whistling: Sometimes, when you have a refrigerant leak, it can cause a hissing or whistling sound to come from the system. This is because the refrigerant is found in a closed system and maintains a high amount of pressure. The hissing happens when that pressure is released as the refrigerant leaks out. This is a common problem in older units.
– Squealing & Screeching: If there is a belt that has worn out in your motor or fan, it can cause a horrible squealing or screeching sound. It is a problem that needs to be checked right away to avoid the problem getting worse. These belts can be easily replaced by a professional with the right training.
– Clicking: When your cooling system turns off and on, there is probably a clicking sound that happens. This is completely normal and more than likely part of the normal sounds of your home. When you hear that cleaning sound over and over again, it is indicative of a problem that needs addressing. It is usually a sound that happens when there is an electrical issue.
