As the weather starts to heat up, more and more we are making the switch from winter to summer. This means that it’s time to get ready to turn on your AC system. You want to make sure your AC system is up and ready with a tune-up appointment long before you have to use your AC. During a tune-up appointment, the professionals you’re working with can find issues and fix them before you are so reliant on that AC system to keep you cool. One problem that is common for older AC units is a refrigerant leak. Knowing the signs of a refrigerant leak can help you get it fixed before the problem is so big that replacement is necessary. North Country Aire is here to talk about the signs you should be looking for that point to a problem with your refrigerant.
Signs of a Refrigerant Leak
When it comes to the refrigerant in your AC unit, it is important to remember that it is in a closed system. The refrigerant levels should never get low because it is being cycled through the system. If you have low refrigerant levels, that means that you have a leak somewhere. Here are some signs of a refrigerant leak that all homeowners should be aware of:
– High Humidity Levels: Your AC works to not only cool the air in your house, but it also removes humidity from the air as well. When there isn’t enough refrigerant in the coils to properly cool the air in your home, it also won’t be able to effectively remove humidity from the air either.
– Frozen Coils: You shouldn’t ever see ice building up on the coils of your AC system. When you notice that there is ice on the coils, it means that there isn’t enough refrigerant to effectively remove the moisture and cool the air. The water starts to freeze on the coils and then the entire system won’t be able to work. This is the biggest sign that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
– Water Leaking: As ice starts to build up on the coils, you will have to turn off the AC. Also, when the AC unit cycles through and shuts off, that ice is going to start melting. The water will pool around the unit. It can also cause problems because the water can leak onto the electrical components of the unit and cause short circuits.
– Hissing Sound: Because of the high pressure in the refrigerant lines, when a leak happens, it can cause a hissing sound as it leaks out. It can sound similar to air leaking from a tire.
